Overview

Uzbekistan

The region’s cradle of culture for more than two millennia, Uzbekistan is the proud home to a spellbinding arsenal of architecture and ancient cities, all deeply infused with the fascinating history of the Silk Road. In terms of sights alone, Uzbekistan is Central Asia’s biggest draw and most impressive showstopper. Samarkand, Bukhara, Tashkent and Khiva never fail to impress visitors with their fabulous Mosques, Madrassas and Mausoleums. Despite being a harshly governed police state, Uzbekistan remains an extremely friendly country where hospitality remains an essential element of daily life and you’ll be made to feel genuinely welcome by the people you meet.

Tashkent – Capital of Uzbekistan

Tashkent is Central Asia’s hub and the place where everything in Uzbekistan happens. It is one part newly built national capital, thick with the institutions of power, one-part leafy Soviet city and yet another part sleepy Uzbek town, where traditionally clad farmers cart their wares through a maze of mud-walled houses to the grinding crowds of the bazaar.

Khiva - Museum Under the Sky

Khiva a UNESCO World Heritage Listed Town – is truly an open-air museum, with an illustrious history as a main stop along the Great Silk Road.  One can get lost in the quaint lanes that lead to the well-preserved Minarets and Domes of amazing beauty. Poets and philosophers who lived or visited Khiva once called it “the World’s 8th Wonder”. The 18th and 19th Century houses and monuments testify to the city’s past as a Khanate Capital and quasi-independent state under Russian imperial rule.

Samarkand – One of The Oldest Cities of Central Asia

This city is the same age as Ancient Rome and has been destroyed several times. The city witnessed the invading forces of Alexander the Great and Genghis Khan.  But like the Phoenix rising from the ashes, this city always bounced back. Samarkand is the second largest city in Uzbekistan and is more than 2,700 years old. Founded in 700 BC by the Sogdians, it has been the capital of several different empires.  Some scholars say its name means “rich city”, others “a place where people meet” and in Persian, it is known as “the stone city.”

Bukhara - Central Asia's Holiest City

Spanning over 2,000 years of history, UNESCO-listed Bukhara offers cool shade and rest to the modern traveller as it did to the camel caravans that plied the Silk Road hundreds of years ago. A keyway point along the Silk Route, Bukhara thrived for generations on cross-cultural trade between East and West, eventually growing into one of the most important commercial and intellectual centres of the Persian world.  It’s ideal location made it especially attractive to many of the world’s greatest empires and it became a notoriously coveted chess piece for the likes of Tamerlane (Amir Timur), Genghis Khan and perhaps most famously Britain and Russia as part of their “Great Game” for control over Central Asia.

Bukhara not as widely known as Samarkand is just as old, and its ancient architecture and design have remained remarkably well-preserved throughout the ages. The Old Town, encompassing over 140 protected architectural treasures, with its maze of handsome medieval mud-brick buildings, ornately patterned madrassahs and billowing turquoise domes has a unified and authentic feel and is often said to paint the most complete picture of life along the Silk Road before the turn of the century.
